Optima has pioneered a vacuum packaging alternative for coffee. The InlineCan, introduced commercially in March by NewCoffee GmbH & Co., is a carton packaging solution that protects aroma and freshness.
Roasted beans are protected by a gas blanket immediately after the coffee is ground and sealed in the cube-shaped can with an aroma-proof membrane. An Optima CFS filling and closing machine receives the semi-completed packaging from a Hörauf production machine. The InlineCan is suitable for packaging ground, whole bean, and instant coffee.
The re-closable plastic lid and extraordinary barrier make the InlineCan an alternative to vacuum packaging.
“It took several years of intense teamwork with Optima from the first idea to the completion of the new product. We are happy that we can now present the result in our stores,” said Michael König, managing director of NewCoffee, a subsidiary of Aldi Süd.
The stackable cubes offer sufficient space for detailed product information and the uniform size means manufacturers are also no longer locked into pre-determined standard weights and volumes (e.g. 250 and 500 grams). Ulrich Burkart, sales director of food solutions at Optima, said an aluminum-free recyclable version is next.
