Ahlstrom will supply two top European coffee houses with fully compostable infusion materials for single-serve capsule lids.
Ahlstrom’s solution, made of polylactic acid (PLA) and vegetable parchment materials, will be used for capsule lids produced for Caffe Vergnano in Italy and Cap Mundo in France, according to a company announcement Dec. 23.
The company’s move is aimed at strengthening its position in Europe as a supplier of compostable infusion materials for single-serve coffee capsules. The new Ahlstrom GreenCapsule top lid is designed as a compostable and biodegradable alternative to the common aluminum lid used in coffee capsules.
Europeans use about 10 billion single-serve capsules each year but fewer than 5% are made with compostable or biodegradable materials, Ahlstrom said in a statement. Coffee houses are seeking environmentally sensitive alternatives.
