PAPUA NEW GUINEA
The coffee berry borer is threatening production on Papua New Guinea.
The government-run Coffee Industry Corporation reported in June that tons of cherry coffee from the Dei District of the Western Highlands Province were being rejected each day because of the beetle infestation. Harvests have been confiscated and destroyed.
The cherry coffee borer first appeared here in 2009 and the current outbreak was discovered in February. More than 80% of the nation’s harvest could be affected if the beetle is not stopped before it reaches major production regions.
