Blue Bottle Recalls Coffee Cans
Coffee cans open violently
Blue Bottle Coffee is recalling its whole bean coffee can after reports that some lids have forcibly detached when opened.
The company announced the recall on May 9 after receiving 13 reports of lids “detaching rapidly with force when opened and the beans ejecting from the top of the can.” One injury, a finger cut, was reported. About 194,000 cans are affected by the recall.
During roasting, coffee beans can inflate as much as 20% from gasses released within cell walls. It can take several days for roasted coffee to de-gas.
Consumers are advised not to open the cans and instead return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Coffee remaining in cans already opened is safe to use.
