Volcafe Coffee, based in Switzerland and owned by commodities house ED&F Man, announced it will set up export facilities in Yunnan Province of China. This along with news that the next International Conference on Coffee Science will be in Yunnan is indicative that major investment in building domestic and international markets for Chinese coffee is building momentum. The new partnership between Volcafe and China’s Simao Arabicas Coffee Co. certainly signal intent to move beyond high-volume buyers.
What markets will this new partnership open? Volcafe is based in Switzerland, trades globally, and has a specialty coffee division based in the United States. With those bonafides, it is likely the company will enable Simao to sell into the Americas more effectively as more buyers become familiar with mild arabicas from the area.
