Costa Coffee, one of the largest coffee brands in the United Kingdom, has begun roasting at its new facility in Basildon, Essex. The facility, priced at £38m ($46 million), is designed to quadruple Costa’s roasting capacity.
“Costa is growing rapidly as a global business and our new roastery will provide the platform for sustained international expansion,” according to the company. “Turning on our new roasting capacity is a landmark for the business. It’s a statement of our ambition to grow and our passion for great coffee.”
Costa is now roasting 45,000 tons of beans at the new facility which covers 85,690 square feet. Construction started in November 2015 only 14 miles from Tilbury Docks where its raw coffee beans are imported.
The new roasting facility is one of Europe’s largest. The operation is expected to have a lifespan of 20-30 years.
