Obese mice can lose weight by consuming high levels of caffeine, according to a recent report in Nature Communications.
The study, by Guo Zhang and colleagues, identified neural circuitry that takes place when caffeine is used to suppress appetite and increase energy expenditure in obese mice.
Caffeine interacts with an area of the brain causing the mice to use more energy, eat less and lose weight.
The mice consumed caffeine equivalent to 24-26 cups of coffee for a human being.
