Nespresso Unveils Aluminum Capsules
Nespresso capsules now use 80% recycled aluminum, are 8% lighter.
Nespresso introduced new coffee capsules in May that use 80% recycled aluminum, continuing what the company calls its “journey towards circularity going further to minimize waste and maximize reuse of product materials.”
Recycled aluminum requires less energy to produce than other materials and protects coffee aromas and freshness, the company said in a statement. The new capsule uses less aluminum than past Nespresso products making it 8% lighter.
The new coffee capsules are used on the company’s Original Line Master Origin Colombia coffee. Originally introduced in selected countries this March, they will continue to be added to the product line in other countries this July. Nespresso wants to have the full Original Line and Vertuo capsules using the recycled aluminum capsules by the end of 2021.
The launch of the capsules follows the introduction of new fully recyclable boxes for Nespresso machines, made from 95% recycled material, earlier this year. By the end of 2021, Nespresso targets to have all machines sold in this new packaging.
“These new initiatives take Nespresso a step closer to creating a more circular business model,” said Jérôme Pérez, Nespresso’s head of sustainability. “We will continue to work towards increasing the proportion of recycled aluminum in our coffee capsules and to drive up the recycling rate of our used capsules, making it as easy as possible for our customers to recycle them.”
