The same birds' nests that when soaked in water and steamed become bird's nest soup are now being marketed as a "white coffee." RBN Global Sdn Bhd with three offices Malaysia claims its Royal Bird’s Nest 4 in 1 White Coffee combines the antioxidants from coffee with the medicinal qualities of swiftlet nests.
The subspecies of birds who create edible homes from their saliva are indigenous to southeast Asia and are considered under threat of extinction in some locations. Bird farming to ensure a stable supply of these edible nests became a common practice towards the end of the 20th century.
A Reuters report noted in February that the nests alone can sell for as much as $2,500 per kilogram. A 2011 BBC feature reported an even higher figure of $3,000 per kilo.
