The 2017 Tea Masters Cup International in Hong Kong will be held according to new rules and regulations. The competition will include four categories – tea preparation, tea pairing, tea mixology, and tea tasting. In the tea preparation category, competitors will be expected to brew an ‘organizers tea’ and a master’s tea of their choice.
The tea pairing category will include the ‘organizers composition’, consisting of a tea or tea-based drink paired with a snack (which may also be chosen by the organizers and may involve special requirements stipulated by the organizers), and ‘master’s composition’, consisting of tea and a snack, prepared from any ingredients. In the tea mixology category, competitors will be expected to create a drink using tea and other ingredients chosen from a fixed list and with other organizers’ requirements, and also create a ‘master’s mix’, using the competitor’s own recipe.
The tea tasting category will include a 5 minute controlled tasting of one tea blended with three other components, and a 10 minute blind tasting 5 straight teas. Tea Masters Cup dates to 2013 with 15 countries now participating in the competitions. The new rules will apply to Tea Masters Cup International competitions, while national competitions may still continue to be run under the old regulations, depending on the decision of national organizers.
