IPCoffees Specialty, with offices in San Diego, Calif. and Mexico City, is a relative newcomer to importing specialty coffee to the United States. Founded in 2013, the company sources coffee from Mexico’s Veracruz, Puebla and Chiapas regions. Andy Newborn, director of coffee at IPCoffees Specialty, announced the company has begun using GrainPro solar dryers at its wet mills.
The Solar Bubble Dryers were developed in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Philippines and the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. Though this product is available in two sizes, IPCoffees Specialty is using the smaller model. It has a drying area of 25 square feet.
According to a blog post on the IPCoffees Specialty website, using the new equipment is part of a strategy to offer several types of drying to small holder producer customers. The goal is to improve coffee quality by doing so.
