Peet’s opens its first mainland China coffee bar and roastery in Shanghai
CHINA
Peet’s Coffee & Teas, the California-based specialty coffee company, opened for business in Shanghai, China, in November 2017 marking the company’s first international location. The 3,900-square-foot coffee bar will include a roastery.
The opening marks the formation of Peet’s Coffee China, an independent venture between Peet’s Coffee and Hillhouse Capital, an international investment firm. The effort will be led by Vivian Zhang, c.e.o. of Peet’s China.
“In response to the growing demand in China for premium craft coffee, Peet’s Coffee is thrilled to bring to the region its handcrafted mastery and to welcome new fans into the Peetnik community,” Zhang said. “When (founder) Alfred Peet opened his first coffee bar in Berkeley, California in 1966, he established our long-standing commitment to roasting the highest-quality coffee and Peet’s continues to stay true to that in China.”
Coffee will be roasted on Probat equipment and espresso machines are provided by La Marzocco.
“Expanding internationally is a natural progression of our United States success and Peet’s recognizes that China is a fast-growing market with a flourishing base of coffee lovers seeking distinctive experiences,” said Shawn Conway, Peet’s c.o.o. “We are very excited by China’s coffee market momentum and for the opportunity to cater to their young consumers eager to discover exceptionally fresh, hand-roasted coffee.”
