Early this year Starbucks introduced a One Tree for Every Bag program which plant a rust-resistant coffee tree for every bag of coffee sold. So far the program has raised enough funds to plant 18 million trees in the past 18 months.
In October the company expanded the program to plant a tree for every cup of Mexico Chiapas coffee sold at its 13,500 US and Mexican stores on National Coffee Day.
The company teamed with ECOM and Conservation International to distribute the trees to growers throughout Central and South America.
“We have an ambitious goal of planting 20 million trees and celebrating Chiapas coffee, the birthplace of our ethical sourcing program over a decade ago,” said Craig Russell, e.v.p., Starbucks global coffee.
