ITALY
New standards are being developed that will redefine the expectations of a high-quality Italian espresso.
The Italian chapter of the Specialty Coffee Association recently initiated the project with the goal of re-establishing what consumers can expect in an espresso, according to SCA Italia National Coordinator Dario Ciarlantini.
Experts, tasters, roasters, engineers, baristas and others in the espresso coffee industry are participating in the project, the SCA stated in an announcement. The new standards will be unveiled in October during the Host2017 International Hospitality Exhibition in Milan, Italy.
The effort “will make a sea change in the quality of baristas’ approach to espresso and how the drink is perceived by end consumers, which is the key goal if we are to raise the bar of quality perception,” Ciarlantini said in a statement.
“The espresso world has been going through a transformation in recent years. The growing popularity of espresso around the world has generated cross pollination and interpretations for a variety of local tastes, a variety of types of coffee and roasting,” the statement added, “making it important to establish an identity based on Italian style, incorporating quality while keeping with the times.”
