The COVID-19 pandemic is creating a worldwide economic crisis, but recent research indicates the United Kingdom’s retail coffee sector in the rebound in the long-term.
Allegra World Coffee Portal surveyed more than 2,000 consumers and industry leaders in February before restrictions were put in place across the UK and their findings indicate that with time coffee shops will be perking once again.
“The coffee shop segment will undergo profound change due to coronavirus but remains one of the UK economy’s most resilient,” Allegra’s research summary stated. “With forging human connections firmly at its core, the hospitality industry will endure this crisis and thrive.”
The study acknowledges that COVID-19 has created significant problems for the retail coffee industry. Most shops were forced to close while a few were able to convert to takeaway sales and grocery store distribution. Government assistance, business loans, and employee furloughs have eased the strain.
Despite the hardships, Allegra expects most businesses will be back in service as soon as it is safe to do so, as early as this summer.
In reaching this conclusion, the research points to the retail coffee industry’s focus on quality. About 57% of consumers surveyed said they seek higher-quality coffee and shops meet those expectations. Retail stores also provide diverse food, especially for lunch. They deliver with the help of third-party services and they use technology to keep up with customers’ payment options.
