London-based Twin Trading was acquired by Sustainable Harvest in November, according to David Griswold, the Portland, Ore. company’s founder and c.e.o.
Matt Earlam was named to manage European operations. Earlam formerly led Twin Trading, a non-profit venture supporting smallholders trading coffee, cocoa, and nuts in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Twin, founded as a charity in 1985, had earlier announced it was ceasing operations after 30 years of coffee trading.
Griswold said he was inspired by Twin Trading. “We are committed to maintaining Twin’s spirit and I have no doubt that together we will dream up new ways to use coffee to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges,” he said.
Earlam said Sustainable Harvest will provide the global platform, experience, and tools that out staff need to continue building a brighter future for all in the coffee world. We are pleased to resume full service for all of our partners with renewed energy,” he wrote.
Twin has focused its attention in East Africa for the past decade, generating $129 million in Fairtrade business, according to a press release announcing the sale. The price and terms were not disclosed.
