Victor in this year's German Roasting Championship was André Kirberg, who beat 13 other contestants to take first place for the second consecutive year. The event, held May 24–26, 2023, was organized by the German Chapter of the Specialty Coffee Association and hosted by Probat, the maker of coffee processing equipment.
In second place was Andrès Maraia, followed by Nicolai Fürst, both from Colombia. The competition tested the professionals on both gas-powered and electric roasters.
The three-day event rated the competitors on their skills in grading green coffee beans, roasting, tasting, and judging. They demonstrated their adeptness in processes like sorting, identifying defects, and developing a roasting profile. On hand were an international panel of SCA volunteers and the jury,
"We were welcomed at PROBAT like friends and family," said André Kirberg following the award ceremony. "To be able to defend my title in this excellently equipped setting and in the most beautiful weather makes me particularly happy."
One message of the event was the potential to improve emissions performance by utilizing an electric roaster powered by green electricity. In this instance, the machine was Probat's electric P05 shop roaster.
