Tea Report June 2015
USA
Aubrey and Jeremy Lopatin of Arbor Teas, based in Arbor, Mich., are the first tea company in the US to pack all their teas in backyard compostable packs.
With their goal of offering high quality organic and fairly-traded teas to their customers as sustainably as possible, they struggled to find packaging that matched their vision. Tins, they say, are the least environmentally-friendly option, Kraft paper canisters and packets lacked what they were looking for in sustainability and performance.
They wanted packaging that would protect their teas, use as little material as possible and cause the least possible waste, and they found the solution at Innovia Films, a UK-based company that produces specialty, high performance polypropylene and cellulose films made from wood pulp that degrade in 12 weeks and are suitable for food packaging.
The cellulose product that Arbor Teas chose as been converted into compostable packets by Eagle Flexible Packaging in the US, and a fully compostable label was developed for them by US-based Pure Labels. Arbor Teas’ responsible, carbon-free business practices and organic, sustainable approach to tea retailing has earned them many certifications – including one now from Compostable Packaging.
