Chicago-based snack retailer Garrett Popcorn has launched the world’s first matcha-flavored popcorn, Matcha CaramelCrisp in Japan.
Garrett Popcorn Shopsis a gourmet popcorn brand, established in Chicago in 1949, and has handed down the secret family recipe through three generations. The company has a total of 40 shops around the world – 16 in the US and overseas including Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, Malaysia, Kuwait, Thailand, Korea, and, since 2013, Japan.
The new green tea flavored popcorn balances the mellow sweetness of CaramelCrisp and bittersweet powdered green matcha grown in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan's largest tea-growing region.
"We have wanted to introduce the flavor since our first launch in 2013. It took a while because we had to test various ways to determine how to maintain the delicate flavor and aroma of matcha when prepared at high temperature," said Kanae Yano, a spokeswoman for Garrett.
