California-based Peet’s Coffee will spend $58 million to create an east coast roastery in Suffolk, Va. The new facility, scheduled to open in 2018, will total 175,000 square feet and create 135 new jobs.
The expansion, announced Dec. 9, will double the company’s production capacity and deliver coffee to key East Coast markets.
“Financing the development of an East Coast Roastery in Suffolk, Va. … is a strategic investment in the company,” said Dave Burwick, Peet’s Coffee c.e.o. “Suffolk is the perfect location to support our high-quality standards while ensuring that the freshest beans are made available to our east coast consumers much more quickly than today.”
As part of the Virginia decision, worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and local government agencies. A $1 million grant was provided by the state Opportunity Fund. The company also will be eligible for sales and use tax exemptions on manufacturing equipment.
