In September, Bellwether Coffee in Berkeley, Calif., which markets a fully electric micro-roaster, attracted $40 million in second round funds from a half dozen “clean tech” investors.
The Bellwether site promises retailers the ability “to responsibly source, create, roast, and share delicious coffee in a socially responsible way.”
“Its zero-emissions commercial roaster and state-of-the-art software platform is available to business owners via a monthly fee, allowing cafes, grocers, and other businesses to start saving immediately while delivering fresh coffee,” writes Bellwether.
Retail roasters lease the machines for $1,100 per month. The machine does not require ventilation, permits, or the installation of gas lines.
Developed in 2018, founder Ricardo Lopez anticipates in-store roasting at cafes and grocery locations “will become the rule, not the exception.” He estimates the market for electric roasters will be worth $680 million by 2024.
