MALAWI
Five international research teams are working across the African continent to generate a fundamentally new climate science focused on its impact on human development.
Under the Future Climate for Africa (FCFA) program, the Climate Information for Resilient Tea Production (CI4Tea) project has conducted research on the effect of climate change on tea production and quality in Malawi and Kenya by leading researchers at the University of Leeds. It has done this by tailoring the climate information for local tea-producing regions in order to help tea producers adapt to climate change to improve sustainability of the tea sector.
In Malawi, FCFA is working with the Ethical Tea Partnerships’ Malawi 2020 Tea Revitalization Program to assist women farmers. CI4Tea is a ten-month research project funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the Department for International Development under the FCFA Applied Research Fund.
The research is important as not only is tea a significant contributor to the economies of Malawi and Kenya but these countries are prominent exporters of tea globally.
