In January 2016, the UK’s new tea academy (UKTA) will be launched to offer training and certification at three levels to suit the different needs and interests of people in the UK and from around the world who work in the tea industry, the service industry and in hospitality, or simply have a passion to learn more about tea.
The demand for tea training is growing fast in the UK but to date no certified training has been offered. The UK Tea Academy has been established to offer not just the training but also the certification that proves participants have reached a required standard of knowledge and expertise. Course director, Jane Pettigrew, will also deliver some of the courses alongside a team of top tea professionals.
Level 1 Foundation: Tea Champion 12 hours, is aimed at those working in tea companies, tea shops, tea bars, online tea businesses, coffee bars, hotels, restaurants, and lounges, and anyone who has a general interest in tea.
Level 2 Intermediate: Tea Sommelier 21 hours, is aimed at people who own or manage a tea business, tearoom, tea lounge, etc. who need to understand all the topics covered in the foundation course but in more detail.
Level 3 Tea Master offers core plus optional modules and is aimed at people who wish to extend their knowledge and understanding of such topics as World Tea Ceremonies (Japan, China, South Korea); Tea Traditions (England, Morocco, Russia, Turkey, India, Mid & Far East, WuWo); The History of Tea; The Cultivation of Tea; The Tea Trade; Running a Tea Business; The Science of Tea and Health; Tea Blending.
